Kachelmann

March 26, 2010

Kachelmann, a well-known TV weather man, has been accused of raping his girl-friend by his girl-friend. It seems that there is proof of this rape because his girl-friend went directly after it to an official medicolegal expert. Kachelmann and his girl-friend were in a relationship for 11 years before this incident.

Now, it is always hard to judge from the outside what happened there. But one thing seems to be sure in my opinion: Kachelmann is at least guilty of picking the wrong girl-friend; how can you be together with someone for 11 years and then deliver him/her to the media on a silver platter, destroying his/her career in the process?

A friend pointed out that the Babel-17 Logo could be improved. So here it is, the new and improved logo. And the best: It still features a legal Babel-17 constant expression ūüôā

… and back to Google Code

March 14, 2010

The nice thing about distributed version control is that migrating repositories from one server to another is so simple. So I decided to transfer Babel-17 back to Google Code, this time with Mercurial as VCS. It took me only about a minute to reconfigure my local repository to use now google code as standard push/pull destination/source. Mercurial rocks!

I also created a new Babel-17 logo. The advantage of the new one is that the displayed expression is actually a legal constant expression in Babel-17 denoting the set consisting of the constructor B and the number 17.

Babel-17 goes BitBucket

Babel-17 now uses Mercurial. An up-to-date repository is available from now on at BitBucket .

Why Pechstein might be innocent

March 12, 2010

Claudia Pechstein, a german speed skater, is one of the most successful winter olympians of all time. She has been accused and found guilty of doping. There has been no direct evidence of this guilt, but the experts of the doping agency claim that they have found indirect proof by examining Pechsteins blood.

Pechstein claims that she is innocent and says that a natural blood anomaly she has been born with is the cause for this indirect proof.

From a medical point of view, this is an unlikely, but possible explanation.
But how unlikely is it to be the most successful german winter olympian of all time? Could there be a correlation between this fact and her blood anomaly?

I think most medical doctors have no clue about statistics. Innocent people should not suffer because of this.

A single Bayern M√ľnchen is not enough for Germany

March 11, 2010

It is time that German soccer again closes that gap that has widened between it and the other top european soccer leagues in England, Spain and Italy.

It seems evident what the reason for this gap is: the lack of two european top clubs from Germany. Let’s look at the leagues. Here we have:

England:  Manchester United and Chelsea

Spain: Barcelona and Real Madrid

Italy: Juventus Turin, Milan, Inter

Germany: Bayern M√ľnchen

Of course, Italy has had some problems in the recent past, with Milan and Juve having much weaker teams than in the past. This is the reason why currently the German and the Italian leagues are coming closer in the official ranking. But in my opinion  the Italian soccer leagues will return soon to their past glory.

Looking at the above list, it is clear that every other top league has at least two top clubs. Germany needs a second one, too. Personally, I am a fan of Werder Bremen, and for some time it looked like Bremen could become that second team. The last two years seem to suggest otherwise. But what other team could seriously challenge Bayerns top spot? Leverkusen? Schalke? Time will tell. Schalke could become a serious contender if it keeps Magath as a trainer and gets a grip on its financial problems.

Babel-17 interpreter coming soon

March 11, 2010

A fully tail-recursive continuation-passing-style interpreter for Babel-17 v0.2 is on its way. It will arrive somewhere in between two weeks and a month and will come with a plugin for Netbeans 6.8 and with an updated Babel-17 spec.
